(October 7-8th & October 28-29th)Once we finished our recruiting trip to the City on Friday, many Investment Banking students made their way back to Ithaca for a quiet evening.“Why quiet?” you ask. Isn’t this experience supposed to be College 2.0?!?!?Well, it is, except when you have a Case Competition that starts early the next morning.Case Competitions are opportunities, typically team-based, for MBA students to solve a real world problem using theories from the classroom. For example, the cases may be marketing centric, but have an economics component, or finance-focused but require concepts from accounting and strategy. They (typically) cover multiple disciplines and subject matters. Here, at Johnson, we are extremely fortunate to have the ability to participate in three different types of case competitions: intra-school competitions, inter-school competitions held in Ithaca, and inter-school competitions hosted by other top schools. That Saturday was for the latter. Johnson was invited to participate in the...

(Time Period: 2nd Week of October)We started the 2nd half of the core after our Fall Break. Say it with me…Finance, and Stats, and Strategy! Oh My!...Finance, and Stats, and Strategy! Oh My! (Wizard of Oz reference)Fortunately, we had the “break" to rest up. Well, sort of. Let me explain. My fall break:Tuesday we finished our third and last final exam around 1pm. Not too bad, and again, like our midterms, the exams were very fair. Afterwards, a large portion of our class made a pit stop at "the library" and imbibed as much "knowledge" as we could before it was time for our travel arrangements. I will say that I am sure that some 1st Year Johnson MBAs (that may need to be singular, not plural) spent their Fall Break at "the library" and continued to drink in the "knowledge", perhaps in an exotic locale, but for the majority, Fall Break was about recruiting and / or MBA Conferences. My break was devoted to recruiting. The Career Management Center chartered a bus for those students interested in the "Fall...

Wow! 3 months since my last post, huh?I’d say that the reason I haven’t posted is because I’ve been busy, but that would be a lie, because I’ve been RIDICULOUSLY busy!!!But now that I am a week into the holiday break and am caught up on LIFE, this blog IS my to-do list.I simply cannot believe how much we have all done in the last 16 weeks. I saw one of my fellow bloggers use the phrase “drinking from a fire hose”. It felt more like Niagara Falls to me. But it was manageable, and in hindsight, it was an amazing experience. Quite possibly the most fun I never want to have again.I have begun to receive phone calls and emails from prospective students that I have previously met with on campus, or spoken to via email and/or phone about their admissions decisions, and I want to make sure my blog accurately provides those students with a window into my first 16 weeks of Johnson. My next posts, which will be up later today, will cover the core as whole; where we are in recruiting; happenings on and around campus. I don’t...

This week marked the end of our first round of core classes (marketing, microeconomics, and financial accounting). The last 2 months have FLOWN by and final exams start Friday morning, run through the weekend, and conclude on Tuesday. We are then rewarded with a week long Fall Break! However, my classmates and I, that are interested in Investment Banking, are choosing to spend the week in New York City and, with the help of faculty, are set to meet with EIGHT banks over 2 days. Busy...Busy...but more on that in a future post.I had the pleasure to experience an extremely amazing event on Tuesday evening. A handful of the 2nd Year MBAs organized, and flawlessly executed, a Date Auction to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. "Team in Training" set a goal to raise $26,000 during the coming year to battle blood cancers. In one night...in one date auction...on a Tuesday...the night before the last day of classes...3 days before finals...in Ithaca, NY...attended by poor MBAs...the team raised OVER $2,200!!!The...

Last week, I experienced many “firsts” in business school.  It marked the beginning of our Corporate Briefings, Investment Banking office hours, Midterms, all-nighterS, and Cornell Homecoming.  I’m pleased to say I survived them all.

Corporate Briefings-

An opportunity to hear from Johnson alumni, many are part of the recruiting teams, at major global companies about their organizations during a group presentation, and then an opportunity to socialize and ask questions you’ve prepared while enjoying beverages and hors d’oevres.

Last week (week 1 of briefings) we were blessed with visits from J.P. Morgan, Bayer, Intel, Citi, Unilever, Chevron, Sprint, Cisco, Deutsche Bank, Synthes and Liberty Mutual.  That’s a serious list.  Johnson Alumni, Thank you!

Office Hours-

I had “Office Hours” with a Johnson ’06 Vice President at a NYC-based Investment Bank.  Probably the most exciting 20 minutes of my time at Johnson thus far!  Talk about blood pumping.  “Office Hours” equals a chance...

I was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Ohio University.  Within a year of graduation I accepted a position within Fidelity Investments where I worked for the next 6.5 years doing Private Wealth Management.  While at Fidelity, I became skilled at adding value and efficiencies to an individual’s household balance sheet via financial planning techniques, and I became passionate about developing relationships with my clients.

I applied to b-school to further develop my understanding of finance, and am interested in pursuing a career in Investment Banking that will allow me to utilize my technical and quantitative skills, and continue to provide me an outlet to showcase my zeal for client relations.

I am very excited about being here at Johnson and could not imagine being anywhere else for the next 2 years.   Johnson was my top choice.  The sense of community and collaboration I experienced during my visits was second to none.

As a blogger,...
